This space is for anyone disentangling from identities, roles, or belief systems that were handed to them before they had a say.

It speaks to writers, thinkers, and readers drawn to psychological depth, spiritual autonomy, and direct experience over inherited narratives. To those who have felt miscast, othered, or constrained by systems that define worth through performance, conformity, or approval.

It also resonates with people in recovery—from substances, from conditioning, from cultural or familial scripts—but it is not limited to a recovery narrative. The recognition that there is nothing wrong with you and there never was applies to anyone questioning the narratives they were given about who they are and what they’re worth.

Above all, this is a space for those returning to an original self beneath conditioning—living, creating, and thinking from what is true rather than what was prescribed. This recognition has guided my work for over a decade.

Kelly Thompson is a former broadcaster, and a literary interviewer and essayist whose in-depth conversations with writers including Lidia Yuknavitch, Melissa Febos, Terese Mailhot, Lacy M. Kelly Thompson’s work grows out of a lifelong search for truth. With nearly four decades in 12-step recovery, she understands recovery as a radical unlearning of false selves and inherited belief systems. Her orientation to consciousness has been shaped through formal training as an advanced Yoga Nidra facilitator under Kamini Desai, and study with teachers including Amrit Desai, Michael Singer, Jacquelyn Small, and Stanislav Grof. A lifelong meditation practitioner across traditions including Dzogchen and non-dual Kashmir Shaivism, her work is rooted in direct experience rather than secondhand belief.

Her approach is interspiritual rather than doctrinal, informed by the recognition that truth is embedded within all wisdom traditions and becomes visible through lived realization, not adherence to any single system. She is less interested in belief structures than in what survives them—what remains when inherited frameworks fall away.

Trained as a Licensed Clinical Social Worker, Kelly brings a rigorous understanding of trauma, nervous system regulation, and psychological development to her mentoring and teaching. She no longer practices psychotherapy in a traditional clinical frame, but draws on decades of clinical training to support others in integrating expanded states of awareness into ordinary life. Her mentoring sits at the intersection of consciousness, recovery, and embodiment—less about fixing what’s “wrong,” and more about questioning the idea that something was wrong with us in the first place.

Beyond her mentoring and teaching, Kelly has spent nearly a decade working as a literary editor—nine years as founding editor of Voices on Addiction at The Rumpus, and now as founding editor of The W(hole), a literary journal devoted to recovery from anything that disconnects us from ourselves. Her work sits at the intersection of recovery, consciousness, and literary craft, supporting writers in telling their stories from a place of inherent wholeness rather than deficit or self-repair. She also facilitates memoir-writing communities and developed the Writing From Wholeness™ framework for writers working with transformative material.

This phrase has shaped my recovery work with others for more than a decade—and in July 2024, I gave it a new home as a Substack newsletter.

I created There’s Nothing Wrong With You (And There Never Was) for everyone—because while it especially hits home for those who’ve been silenced, pathologized, or cast out, it speaks to something deeper: the root error of our culture. The belief that we must earn our worth isn’t just a lie—it’s the very engine of social injustice. It’s what drives othering, fear, control, and disconnection.

I was born and raised in a high-control religious sect, and I know what it means to lose your world in order to save your self. That experience—of exile, of rupture, of rebuilding from ash—infuses everything I write. But this isn’t just about religion. All of us inherit secondhand identities, roles, and belief systems that shape us before we ever have a say. Recovery, in this space, means unlearning those inherited scripts and coming home to what’s real.

Real isn’t an aesthetic. It’s a becoming. A return to our original wholeness.

You can’t perform it. You can’t fake it.

But you can recognize it. And when you do, you know.

I’ve spent years working this land—not land you can see on a map, but the geography of my life. I cleared it. I tended it. I named it. I invented a language to describe it. Through that labor, a poetics emerged—my poetics. Not borrowed. Not inherited. Invented. This is authorship. This is my land.

I write from the territory of truth-telling and pattern-breaking—working at the intersections of psychological depth, spiritual integrity, and generational trauma. This kind of writing doesn’t always land easily. It touches collective nerves, disturbs inherited scripts, and sometimes invites misunderstanding, resistance, or projection. But it’s what I’m here to do. Because some of you recognize it. Because it’s how I return to my truest self and my intact wholeness.

What is “There’s Nothing Wrong With You (And There Never Was)”?

A recognition rather than a remedy.
It begins from the premise that our core self was never broken — only shaped by conditioning, roles, and inherited beliefs. What appears as deficiency is often the result of disconnection from that original wholeness. This recognition applies to anyone, not just those who identify as being “in recovery.” Wherever inherited identities or cultural conditioning have obscured the self, the work is the same: to see through what was learned and return to what has always been intact. This recognition has guided my work and writing for more than a decade.

What is Writing From Wholeness™?

A literary and creative framework for working from direct experience rather than deficit, performance, or borrowed identity. Writing From Wholeness™ invites writers to create from original authority — the place beneath roles, conditioning, and inherited narratives — allowing authentic voice and pattern-breaking insight to emerge.

What does recovery mean here?

Recovery is the movement from secondhand identity to lived selfhood.
It is the ongoing process of disentangling from inherited roles, cultural conditioning, and survival adaptations, and returning to the original wholeness that precedes them. In this space, recovery extends beyond substances or traditional definitions. It applies to any pattern that substitutes for the self or obscures what is real.

What you get:

My experience, strength, and hope—as well as the HOW of recovery in specific, concrete actions. Because recovering is lifelong, and this journey is a wild adventure that keeps on giving. (Minimum two posts a month.)
When I say I’ll share the how of recovery, I don’t mean recovery from one specific thing. I mean recovery from the childhood and societal conditioning that leads to dis-ease and illness of all kinds—and creates the need for recovery to begin with. (See below.)

Passion and purpose. A major perk of recovery is finding both. That happens when we align with our true selves. Mine is writing.

My approach to recovery—as recognition rather than repair—shaped every editorial decision when I founded the Voices on Addiction column at The Rumpus in 2016. It was a first-of-its-kind literary space devoted to publishing stories from across the full spectrum of addiction. From the beginning, I made it a priority to feature not just those in recovery from substance use, but anyone impacted by addiction: family members, friends, clinicians, artists, writers, and people navigating the gray areas in between. It was never about one kind of addiction or one kind of recovery. It was about human experience—messy, honest, and unfiltered.

The column became a home for those impacted by addiction and seeking affirmation. It broke stigma by breaking silence. We published personal essays, interviews, and hybrid work that reveal the complexity of healing, the multiplicity of truths, and the radical act of telling the real story—without shame, apology, or polish.

When I launched my own Substack, There’s Nothing Wrong With You (And There Never Was), I carried that ethos forward. I widened the definition of recovery itself—not just recovery from addiction, but from religious trauma, family scapegoating, perfectionism, high-control systems, and anything else that severs us from our original wholeness. I named what I’ve always known to be true: recovery is recovery from anything that disconnects us from ourselves.

To carry that lineage forward, I created The W(hole) 🕳, a dedicated section within There’s Nothing Wrong With You (And There Never Was). The W(hole) 🕳 builds on the legacy of Voices on Addiction, but widens the frame: recovery (from anything). It is a space for stories of rupture and repair, addiction and beyond, written in the same spirit that guided me from the beginning—honest stories that cut to the bone. Just as VOA held the radical act of telling the real story, The W(hole) 🕳 extends that act to include every kind of disconnection, and every path back to wholeness.

My goal was to expand the frame. To make room for grief, trauma, relapse, rage, love, and survival. To insist that recovery is as diverse, layered, and unruly as the lives we’ve lived.
